WED 14:00-15:00 in Laboratory
Required Texts: FYZ 7: Forces, Motion, and Energy by Holt, 2005 Ed.
FYZ 8: Electricity and Magnetism by Holt, 2005 Ed.
Sound and Light by Holt, 2005 Ed.
GYM I: Edexcel International GCSE and Certificate Physics by Pearson, 2009 Ed.
GYM II-IV: PHYSICS by Holt; 2006 Ed.
Required Materials:
Safety Goggles, not regular glasses
Scientific
Grading:
Practice exercises will be announced regularly and you are strongly encouraged to attempt the exercises for each chapter; especially those found online. These exercises are not graded. Obtain extra class assistance as needed during my office hours. No extra credit assignments are available. All four tests and the final exam must be taken.
Letter grades 90 – 100% A
80 - 89 % B
70 - 79 % C
60 - 69% D
Below 60% F
Class Policies:
Attendance is expected for every lesson; the course is too difficult to expect to achieve success with sporadic attendance. It is also expected that you will show up on time for lectures – continuity is destroyed by habitually missing the first five or ten minutes of class. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class period. Except for very extraordinary circumstances, you will be dropped from the course if you miss more than 20% of the lectures. This includes those passing the course at the time. Constant tardiness will not be tolerated.
Tests are to be taken on time as published in the syllabus. If you must miss
on test day, contact me in advance if possible or see me immediately upon
your return. For a valid excuse, a makeup test can be scheduled to be com-
pleted within one week after the test date. Makeup tests are all fill-in type. If you need a makeup a second time, there will be a 10% grade deduction
automatically. Students generally do poorer on a makeup test.
Tests are designed to be completed within the allotted time and must
be turned in by the end of the allotted time. There is no provision for extra
time to be granted. The final must also be finished within the designated
time period. If you are late to the start of a test, you must agree to take
the test within the allotted time available or (for legitimate tardies)
take the makeup test instead. No electronic devices (i-pods, cell phones,
etc.) may be out during a test with the obvious exception of an allowed
calculator. Cell phones with calculator functions may not be used as
calculators during a test.
You are expected to see me following any absence to check what material
we covered and if any handouts were given or announcements were made.
Cell phones are to be turned off in lecture and in lab. Cell phones are not
to be out during lecture (for texting, etc.) No visitors are allowed in either
lecture or lab. Sample problems are available on line through Blackboard.
Inclement Weather:
If school is cancelled due to bad weather or similar reason, any test
scheduled for that day will be taken the next lesson we will be meeting.
Course Description:
Explores the fundamental laws, theories, and mathematical concepts of chemistry. Designed primarily for science and engineering majors.
CHM 112 is a four credit hour course involving both a lecture and a laboratory component. The lecture portion covers such fundamentals as:
colligative properties, kinetics and mechanisms, equilibrium, acid-base study, complex ions, solubility products, entropy and free energy, electrochemistry, nuclear chemistry. The laboratory portion teaches students proper techniques in conducting lab work while performing experiments that parallel the concepts presented in lecture.
*STUDENTS NEED TO BE PROFICIENT IN BOTH WRITTEN AND SPOKEN ENGLISH. THE NATURE OF THE COURSE IS TECHNICAL.
